Strega Nona A good-hearted witch…a magic pasta pot…a foolish fellow—fun and trouble ensue! Strega Nona uses her magical powers to help her tiny Italian town overcome many ills, from curing headaches to ridding people of warts. When her helper Big Anthony fools with the magic pasta pot and can’t figure out how to turn it off, pasta threatens to engulf the town—unless Strega Nona can save the day! Based on the popular Strega Nona book series by award-winning author Tomie de Paola, with music by Aron Accurso, this fantastical tale combines creative storytelling, visual arts, and music to teach that the secret ingredient of a good life is always love.

Grades: preK – 2

Latin Jazz Jazz mirrors the social history of the United States. Today the music of the Latin countries and the work of Latino musicians in America continue to influence and redefine the structure of jazz. The Purchase College Latin Jazz Orchestra takes the audience through a musical introduction to the culture, history, and sound of this vibrant jazz style. Presenting classic compositions and new music, the program will combine fiery rhythms with the intensity of true jazz improvisation.

PAWS: Performing Arts Workshops for Secondary Students
A Participatory Program for Your Students

PAWS workshop Your students will have a unique opportunity to experience a variety of performing arts, participating in three workshops they choose from numerous offerings. Students learn skills and techniques not usually taught in their own schools, such as Stage Fighting, Latin Dance, Gospel Singing, and Advanced Improvisation. This is an exhilarating and energizing day for all.

Cost: $10 per student.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favorites

Very Hungry Caterpillar That little caterpillar is returning, along with an assortment of favorite puppet characters! This triple bill includes the wonderful story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s metamorphosis into a beautiful butterfly, the fanciful account of Little Cloud’ s travels through the sky, and the Mixed–Up Chameleon’s discovery of his own unique nature. The whimsical tales have enchanted several generations, and Mermaid’s acclaimed stage adaptation teaches as well as entertains.

The Art of Eric Carle Residency
Kim McCormack, artist and educational consultant, returns to teach the many processes and uses of Eric Carle’s art, this time directly to the children. Andrew Clements' Frindle When is a pen not a pen? When it’s a frindle! That’s the word invented by mischievous fifth-grader Nick Allen when he tries to get the best of his new language arts teacher, the formidable Mrs. Granger. Nick doesn’t think highly of Mrs. Granger’s beloved dictionary, but when he learns something about the origins of words, he decides to invent one of his own. A pen becomes a frindle, and the name soon takes on a life beyond the school and the town to conquer the entire country. “Frindle” even makes it to the next printing of the dictionary! This quirky, award-winning tale about the nature of language and the power of words shows how creative thinking stimulates great teaching and learning. It may well prompt your students to invent their own words!

Mercer Mayer: Alligator Under the Bed How does a little boy get over the big alligator that lives under his bed? Or another child command his toy soldiers to protect him from the big nightmare that lives in his closet? And what about the little girl who lassoes the silly scary thing that lives in her farmhouse attic? What should they do? Based on three classic children’s books by Mercer Mayer, these stories-- combined with vivid costumes and scenery, plus original music by Stuart Kenny--show youngsters how using their own imaginations and creativity can turn fearful things into friends.
