Irish Chamber Orchestra
IRISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
Tuesday, October 29, 8pm
Sir James Galway, flute
Lady Jeanne Galway, flute
You will find yourself transported to the Emerald Isle as our Great Orchestras Series continues with a performance by the Irish Chamber Orchestra, accompanied by virtuoso flautist Sir James Galway.
The Orchestra will be making its Purchase debut under the baton of Virginia Symphony's conductor JoAnn Falletta, as part of a thirteen-city US tour. The program for the evening will evoke the sights and sounds of Ireland and Scotland, while highlighting the technical expertise and unforgettable stage presence of Sir James Galway and his wife, Lady Jeanne Galway.
Herbert Hamilton Harty’s In Ireland, a wonderful fantasy for flute and harp, will set the tone, followed by a rousing rendition of Mozart‘s Flute Concerto No. 2 in D major, a firm favorite in the repertoire. Next, a contemporary take on an ancient tradition - the US premiere of Belfast composer Philip Hammond’s Carolan Variations, inspired by two of harpist Turlough O’Carolan’s well-known traditional tunes, composed in 2011 at the request of Sir James and Lady Jeanne Galway. The evening concludes with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3, his Scottish Symphony. Close your eyes and experience the misty highlands, the sprightly folk dances and heroic legends of Scotland.
