Teatro Nuovo presents a semi-staged performance of Giovanni Simone Mayr’s Medea in Corinto. Mayr, a master awaiting rediscovery, was the teacher and lifelong friend of Donizetti and the most important link between Mozart and Rossini. The opera originally starred Rossini’s future wife, Isabella Colbran, and then became a favorite role of Giuditta Pasta, the first Norma and Anna Bolena, who kept the opera in repertory up to about 1840.

Medea in Corinto showcases soprano Jennifer Rowley as Medea (currently appearing in The Metropolitan Opera’s Il trovatore) supported by two fast-rising tenors, Mingjie Lei as Egeo (a winner at the prestigious Neue Stimmen competition fresh from his Salzburg Festival debut) and Derrek Stark as Giasone (currently at Palm Beach Opera and bound for his debut at the Opernhaus Zürich). The cast also includes soprano Teresa Castillo as Creusa, baritone William Lee Bryan as Creonte, mezzo-soprano Elena Snow as Ismene, baritone Junhan Choi as Tideo and tenor Marco Stefani as Evandro.
