Modern life is complex. We are halfway between so many disparate extremes, split between cities, memories, and generations. We are an amalgam of cultures, our identities fixed yet infinitely fluid. How do we feel most at home? When are we our most enlivened selves?

Choreographer Ephrat Asherie collaborates with Grammy award-winning jazz musician and composer Arturo O’Farrill to address these questions in the company’s newest creation, Shadow Cities. Bringing together EAD’s exhilarating choreography that remixes various street and club dance styles and an original composition featuring O’Farrill’s trademark Latin jazz sound, Shadow Cities explores what it means to be and to feel in-between.

About the Artists

Ephrat Asherie Dance (EAD) is a dance company rooted in African American and Latine street and club dances. Dedicated to exploring the inherent complexities of these dances, EAD investigates the expansive narrative qualities of various vernacular forms, including breaking, hip hop, house, and vogue, as a means to tell stories, develop innovative imagery, and find new modes of expression. Born in Mexico and raised in New York, Arturo O’Farrill is a prolific pianist, composer, and passionate promoter of Latin music and its cultural heritage. Arturo is the founder and Artistic Director of the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of Afro Latin music through performance, education and preservation.
